Gullies of Atri
The Gullies of Atri resemble an alien landscape and visiting them is an experience to do absolutely. The Gullies form a surreal landscape that does not seem to belong to this planet. In reality it is a geological phenomenon that is not at all rare that only in the area of the Italian Adriatic has several manifestations.
In Atri, however, the Gullies are particularly spectacular, sharp and outlined. The barren Gullies cliffs alternate with ditches and ponds, woods and cultivated fields in a wonderful color palette. The Regional Natural Reserve of the Gullies of Atri extends for 380 hectares.
An amazing landscape awaits you with its incredible geological formations, also known as "Dante's bolge" or "scrimoni". Only apparently arid and inhospitable, the Gullies are actually very rich in flora and fauna.
Owls, tawny owls, emerald toads, foxes, weasels, badgers and porcupines live among gorse, tamarisk, wild gladioli and licorice plants. You can freely venture among the marked trails. It is a real paradise for lovers of trekking, endurance and mountain biking.
