DISCOVERING ABRUZZO
Castelli

Along the Provincial Road n. 37, the town of Castelli suddenly appears after passing the hamlet of Casette-Faiano.
The village, at the gates of the Teramo side of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, is located at the foot of imposing peaks, such as those of the Shirt Mountains (2564 m) and Prena (2561 m).

In the furnaces of Castelli, a picturesque village in the province of Teramo, since the Renaissance, the world famous ceramics have been produced. The origins of this center at the foot of the Gran Sasso, probably founded by the Normans of Calascio, date back to the 11th century.

During the visit, do not miss the Church of San Donato, with its characteristic majolica ceiling, and the Museum of Ceramics, Piazza Marconi with the church of San Rocco, the wide flowery staircase of via Concezio Rosa that leads to the upper part of the country.

A little further on, a lookout offers a panoramic view of the underlying Leomogna valley and the imposing mountainous scenery of the Gran Sasso chain. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista overlooks Piazza Roma. Opposite, four narrow comb-like streets are designed by medieval buildings in stone and masonry and decorated with portals, architraves, inscriptions and decorative ceramic elements.
